My Philosophy of Care
Care should be accessible to all, and is not one-size-fits-all! Everyone comes to therapy with a different background and experience. Understanding that approaches to treatment need to be handled with sensitivity and consideration of those experiences is my main priority. My approach to health is understanding one's goals and priorities, and providing education to allow them to make the best decisions for themself and their body. I do not help clients lose weight, but instead try to show them that they can make peace with their bodies and that health comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, genders, and abilities! I believe the healthcare system is unjust and does not care for marginalized communities. Because of that, I use a social justice framework to support clients in advocating for themselves and their needs with their health, as well as reflecting on how I can make my practice and business accessible to as many people as possible, not just those that can afford it. Being a health at every size provider means spreading awareness to my clients that they have options and do not need to buy into the elitist system that tells them their body is wrong and health needs to look a certain way. It means providing opportunities to clients to see a different future and advocating for their needs with other providers, going to other appointments with them or talking to providers on their behalf to ensure safe environments for them to seek medical care and treatment.
About Me & My Practice
I recovered from an eating disorder myself which prompted my passion to help others. I see now how privileged my treatment was and how different it is for others. I also see how it affected those around me and how many gaps still exist in systems that create this inequality. I have committed the rest of my career and practice to making sure I can provide the same care to others that I was afforded, especially those that may not be able to find it elsewhere. Health at every size provided me the first opportunity to make peace with my body in a way that wasn't just replacing eating disorder rules with other societal expectations and restrictions. It opened another door. I have been practicing under this lens for almost 3 years. I seek any continuing education opportunities I can to continue learning and advancing my education and am involved in communities that utilize this framework such as Nalgona Positivity Pride. I advocate for others by speaking to doctors and educating on HAES as well as offer free presentations to smaller communities and schools. I have a therapy dog, Rosie, who saved me during my personal recovery and sits in sessions currently with clients to help them, as well :)
Accessibility Considerations
I am entirely virtual. I provide "walking sessions" for those within a certain distance of my residence but would work with any client on accessibly to this option if they have restrictions and are interested in this option. I also do not weigh my clients.
