My Philosophy of Care

Whatever you did to survive was exactly right and was necessary for your survival. I view eating disorders, substance use disorders, self-harm, and suicidality as lifesaving ways that you adapted to difficult circumstances, even if they are also negatively impacting your life. We will honor and value those techniques, and we will work to understand why you used those techniques. We’ll use that knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions about whether to continue to use those same techniques, or whether to add additional tools to your toolbox to use. We may use a variety of therapeutic strategies, based on your interest, comfort, and preference. I like to use a combination of skills-based approaches, like DBT, with cognitive (or thought-based) approaches to challenge unhelpful thoughts, emotional approaches to process and become more comfortable with feelings, and somatic, or body-based approaches. I strive to be anti-racist, anti-fatphobic, and anti-oppression of all kinds in all that I do. My style tends to be warm, compassionate, and direct, not shying away from difficult subjects or uncomfortable emotions.

About Me & My Practice

I am a non-binary eating disorder professional working as a coordinator for Gender Affirmative Care. I have been with Center for Discovery since 2020 as a primary therapist before moving into the GAC role. I specialize in working with LGBTQ+ populations with eating disorders and trauma, and they love providing trainings and supporting clinicians who work with transgender clients. I have worked in transgender advocacy and support since 2015 and in the field of treatment of eating disorders since 2018. I received my master’s in social work – with internships at Carolina Partners (now MindPath) providing free outpatient therapy for trans adults, and Carolina House Center for Eating Disorder Treatment – and my BA in public policy and women and gender studies, both degrees earned at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. I strive to be anti-racist, anti-oppression and Health At Every Size®/anti-sizeism oriented in all that they do. I believe I started learning about Health At Every Size® during my internship at Carolina House starting in 2018--it is the framework through which I learned to do eating disorder work, primarily learning from fat providers. Outside of work, I love hiking with my dog Lyra and reading romance novels.
