My Philosophy of Care
I approach my work as a human, helping another human. I am humbled and honored to be a confidant for my clients. I approach health from a HAES-perspective. HAES has enormously helped me in my own life and body journey. I often tell my clients that doing the work of body acceptance and learning about size diversity and acceptance is going against the stream of our society. I am compassionate to anyone going through the unlearning process. You will see many anti-diet and body liberation books on my bookshelf in my office.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I see my clients as individuals functioning within systems: for example, family systems, societal systems, and systems of oppression. We do not exist in a vacuum, but are constantly navigating the complex world that we live in. As a white cis-woman with thin privilege, I work to constantly check my own privilege and position of power, while also fighting systems that oppress my own marginalized identities.
I use a holistic approach to health, meaning that I work collaboratively with other health care professionals you are working with as needed to give you the best care, like dietitians, psychiatrists, primary care doctors and any others on your care team. I like to work with other HAES-aligned professionals.
About Me & My Practice
I am a psychotherapist in private practice in Oakland. I started my practice in 2020 and love my work. Around 2016 I began my own body journey, and found great relief through feminist frameworks of the body. I have continued to educate myself and unpack my past and the body stories I learned growing up.
I am a Licensed Be Body Positive Facilitator, which means I am passionate about helping individuals find acceptance in their body size and decrease distress related to body image. I am well versed in Health At Every Size (HAES). I have also ran workshops to teen groups and professional groups about the HAES framework and increasing body acceptance, as well as the racist origins of fat phobia. I continuously learn from ASDAH's webinars and online lectures. I also learn via podcasts. I am excited to get involved with the abolish the BMI initiative ASDAH is starting.
In addition to providing general psychotherapy, I also focus my practice on sex therapy and gender care. I am a Certified Sex Therapist (CST) through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). I specialize in providing therapy for issues related to sex and sexuality. I also have a passion for providing gender-affirming care for clients identifying at any point on the gender spectrum. I am a current member of WPATH (World Professional Association of Transgender Health).
Accessibility Considerations
My office has gender-neutral bathrooms. Although I am on the first floor, there are 3 steps to reach the building’s front door. Clients sit on a couch. There is no receptionist.
