My Philosophy of Care
Hi! I'm Kal. I help folks of all backgrounds find a sense of safety in their body after experiences of trauma, chronic pain, stress, or body-based oppression (sexual and gender-based violence, transphobia, anti-fat bias, ableism, racism, etc). We’ll work together to understand and befriend your nervous system and build upon experiences of safety and connection to promote healing.
As a fat and queer therapist who works with the body and with trauma, I am particularly committed to understanding and centering the experiences of fat, disabled, and chronically ill folks. I bring to this work my own personal history of undoing internalized anti-fat bias and ableism, which is a lifelong and ongoing process. I believe this makes me uniquely suited to helping others interested in exploring these issues for themselves.
About Me & My Practice
I work from an interpersonal neurobiology-informed lens. This recognizes that our bodies and brains heal through experiencing relationships that feel nourishing and safe. I am grounded in an understanding of how trauma, early life experiences, and oppression impact the nervous system and the body. Because of this, my approach is highly relational; I believe the most powerful healing work happens in relationship, and this includes the therapy relationship! I will treat you as the expert in your life, and will prioritize informed consent and your own meaning-making around your experiences. I work from a Health at Every Size and fat liberation perspective, and am passionate about healing for all bodies, especially those at the margins.
Accessibility Considerations
My in-person office is up one flight of stairs and has wide seating (either couches or chairs without arms). All of my equipment for EMDR is suitable for any body size, and I can accommodate a variety of sensory needs (for example, we could use eye movements, but I also have hand buzzers or headphones depending on what is comfy for folks). I also offer online counseling, which will require you to have a secure and private location, an internet connection, and a device for accessing our telehealth session (computer, laptop, mobile phone, or tablet). I welcome any accessibility questions not answered here.
