My Philosophy of Care
My approach to health and to patient care in general is patient centered. I typically ask patients the first time they bring up the word "health" in a session what health means to them. It is different for everyone. I work from trauma-informed and consent based lens. We always talk through different approaches and find what feels best for the patient. I truly believe that I am always learning and also tell my patients that they are the experts in themselves--I am just a guide. I do not practice in a way where I am the "authority" or have "all the answers." I think it is so important that patients discover their own wisdom and what feels good for them. Being a HAES® practitioner means I help clients to achieve their goals for regular eating, being in their life, and eating disorder recovery without trying to control the number on the scale. Weight absolutely comes up from patients because they are experiencing bias and shame in many different settings. I hold space for that and then we also bring the conversation back to what they want and what feels right for them. While also validating that what we are taught by systems in place of what "healthy" is is largely unachievable for most people.
This care is so important to me because I have been harmed directly by anti-fat bias and have seen the years of my life my eating disorder took from me. I want to hold a safe space for clients to explore what feels good and right for them and their bodies.
About Me & My Practice
I came to the work of working with eating disorders and from a Health at Every Size® perspective through my own lived experience with an eating disorder and with experiencing weight stigma. I truly cannot imagine practicing any other way as a dietitian. I have done training through ASDAH, Center for Body Trust, MEDA, and done a lot of my own learning and research that has helped me with my experience caring for fat and superfat+ folks. I do believe that I am always learning from experience and from others so this is not something I plan to stop educating myself about. I have been practicing from a HAES® lens since 2017. I help my clients with self advocacy around medical fatphobia but will also speak with a provider directly to provide education and advocate for my client if needed. Practicing in any other way would be unethical for me.
I am absolutely grounded by nature and love spending as much time outside as I can when I'm not working. I have a daughter who also loves the outdoors and joins me on outside adventures. My husband, daughter, and I all love traveling and meeting new people. We also adore cuddles with our dog and cat. I re-discovered meditation several years ago and find that mindfulness practices have helped me so much as a person and as a provider. With your consent, we might do some breathing or grounding together in a session if it feels right!
