My Philosophy of Care
Please see my website (www.stephaniewarm.com) for more information about my practice. Specific to ASDAH, you can look at my eating/body issues tab, which includes my thoughts about HAES®.
Essentially, what I have observed is that it is challenging to have a peaceful relationship with one's own body and with food when we live in a society that tells people otherwise, with the medical industry (and the pharmaceutical industry) playing a big role in this, among many other sources. It often seems that to have a body, especially a body that does not conform, is bad. Food, or more broadly desire, have become sources of shame. Furthermore, we have the problem of people making assumptions about other people's bodies purely based on size -- without the awareness that bodies of all sizes can be sick, just as bodies of all sizes can be healthy. Plus, of course, what constitutes "health" is a complicated matter.
About Me & My Practice
Again, please see my website for more information about my practice.
My primary form of advocacy has been speaking out when I hear or see fatphobia, supporting patients in advocating for themselves with their doctors, plus sharing some links on my website.
However, for many years now, I have had this fantasy that one day, I will print out HAES® information and travel around to every medical office in NJ and leave a big stack of papers outside the offices. Or perhaps I can gather an army of people to do this and assign them each to a different town!
I say this with some humor, but in all seriousness, I would like to do something more.
Accessibility Considerations
There is a steep staircase up to my office, so this may make my office inaccessible to some. In such cases, we have the option to work virtually.
Also, the bathrooms in the building are labeled "men" and "women" (single use), plus are quite small, although a body of any size should be able to manage, even if uncomfortably.
