My Philosophy of Care
Health is a dynamic concept unique to each individual. I believe in creating a space in which people can explore what health means to them, and then build a relationship with food and their body that supports their definition of health, or wellbeing. This includes discussion of external influences such as diet culture, ableism, racism, capitalism and neurotypical standards that may disrupt the ability of an individual to care for themselves and their body. It also includes discussion of internal cues such as hunger, fullness and satisfaction, as well as the role of food or eating as a regulatory or self soothing strategy if relevant. Utilising frameworks of weight neutral, trauma informed and diversity affirming nutrition care, I work alongside each person to understand their needs, then create an eating pattern, or an eating environment, which allows them to choose foods that meet their needs. I am committed to tailoring my approach to each individual and believe strongly in listening actively, offering reflections, and maintaining informed consent for development of any strategies or plans to move towards dietary change.
About Me & My Practice
As a lover of people and food, being a Dietitian is a career that has always made a lot of sense. There are many limitations to dietetics as a profession though, and I am fortunate to have been introduced to the HAES® and Non Diet frameworks in 2017, which significantly shifted my practice. Since then, I have grown to learn and understand a lot more about the role of social justice in healthcare, and strongly believe in disrupting the status quo to contribute to a more equitable world where all people have access to respectful and affirming care, regardless of shape, size, skin colour or ability. It is an immense privilege to hold space for people to explore their relationship with food and body, supporting them to move to a more peaceful, and respectful relationship that can support them throughout the changing seasons of their life. I also enjoy the clinical complexities of chronic illness and disability, which offer the opportunity to apply the science of nutrition in a way that remains contextualised to the capacity and energy available to each individual. I also have the joy and privilege to lead a team through my business Pod Dietetics, which supports people of all ages and backgrounds to access respectful nutrition care that is weight neutral, trauma informed and diversity affirming. We are actively aiming to disrupt the 'cookie cutter' model of traditional Dietetics and create a healthcare service that is values aligned and people focussed.
