My Philosophy of Care

If your body could speak your language, what would it ask for? How does your body’s unique constellation of characteristics and needs influence food choices? What role does pleasure play in nourishing your body? I love exploring these questions and others like it with clients looking to heal their relationship to food and body.

Like so many of us, I was indoctrinated into diet culture at a very early age. At the age of 10, I learned that my body’s ability (and inherently wise propensity) to hold onto weight was a problem that needed to be fixed. This message was reinforced into my adulthood by a medical system that pathologized weight and encouraged or prescribed disordered eating behaviors as a means of fixing what was never broken. Unknowingly, I struggled with an undiagnosed eating disorder for decades, simply because my body did not look the part.

My personal experiences with anti-fat bias - and my own eating disorder recovery and body liberation journey - largely inform the way I practice as a HAES® nutritionist. There is no "one size fits all" (pun intended) way to nourish the body; everyone's body is different in terms of what it needs, wants, and responds to best. As a HAES® provider also certified in Body Trust®, I view my role as one of helping clients relearn to speak their bodies' language, and tune into and honor what the body is asking for, free of judgement and shame. Through this work, we are able to co-create sustainable ways of nourishing the whole self.

About Me & My Practice

I have been practicing from a HAES® perspective since becoming licensed as a nutritionist in WA in 2015. In 2016, I met a therapist from Tacoma through the Center for Body Trust's provider training program. Shortly after completing our training, we began working together at an eating disorder treatment facility. In 2018 (while attending ASDAH's annual conference in Portland, OR) we decided to start a group practice, Liberating Jasper. Since our practice opened in 2018, we and members of our team have been providing both mental health and nutrition counseling - in addition to hosting weekly virtual support groups, seasonal retreats, special events, and consultation groups for other providers - from a fat-positive, queer-affirming, trauma-informed, HAES® lens.

At Liberating Jasper, medical advocacy is a big part of what we do with and for our clients in fat bodies. Our providers often coordinate with and educate other members of a client's care team (including doctors, surgeons, nurses, midwives, etc.) on weight-inclusive and eating disorder-informed interventions that are most appropriate for our clients.

Outside of my work at Liberating Jasper, I like to garden, camp, kayak, read, write, play and listen to music, go to concerts, cook, and watch absolute garbage (reality television) with zero shame or regret. I live alone in a tiny house with my dog Charlie on a small farm, surrounded by lots of plants (indoor and outdoor), crystals, tarot cards, and animal friends.

Accessibility Considerations

Most of our sessions are done virtually. For those seeking in-person care, our offices are located on the second floor of a two-story building with no elevator access. However, a first-floor office is available to us when direct access is needed (e.g., wheelchair access, other mobility concerns).
We share our space with three other providers--two therapists and one massage therapist. These providers have been trained to be welcoming and inclusive to people in all body sizes.

Most of our furniture can accommodate weights up to 500 pounds, and we have additional Hercules chairs that can accommodate weights up to 770 lbs. We do not weigh folks as a general practice, and there are no scales present in common/shared spaces.

All of our bathrooms (one on the first floor, two on the second floor) are gender-inclusive.
