My Philosophy of Care
My work is firmly and unapologetically rooted in a HAES®, fat liberation, anti-oppressive framework as I believe recovery is only possible when the entirety of a human is honored and the body is trusted. I landed in a HAES® framework early in my career before it was popular, as it was the only approach that resounded with my spirit and my belief that the body is a wise & good guide. I could actually sleep at night treating from a HAES® perspective. I believe the body will be where it is meant to be and that this place it lands is also meant to flex and change throughout a lifespan. Working from a fat liberation framework is also anti-capitalistic and anti-racist, which I believe is imperative as our field focuses on dismantling white supremacy and the tethers it has in patriarchy & misogyny. I work closely with folks who have been in harmful church contexts in which their bodies and relationship with food has been robbed of intuition and connection. We work to reclaim their body autonomy and break free from spiritually traumatizing narratives around food, weight, and their bodies. I have also fallen in love with working with ED clinicians who themselves are doing the brave work of recovery. I also find so much joy in accompanying other dietitians in a supervision or supportive role as they find their unique way of practicing and working to bring healing to our world. I can't believe I get to do this work. It's been my heart & soul for over 20 years!
About Me & My Practice
I came to a HAES® framework early in my career while working inpatient eating disorders. Insurance companies were pressing us for ideal body weight ranges and I found myself defiantly telling all of my patients as they discharged that their ultimate ideal body weight was where their bodies settled naturally in response to their healing & freedom and that whatever place that was could be TRUSTED and was GOOD! It was a total joy to open my own practice in 2010 and be free of having to practice within traditional weight models driven by insurance companies. I feel so honored to come alongside clients as they pursue freedom and also find it important to collaborate care with other providers (medical, psychiatry, fitness, therapists, etc) in order to ensure that the care my clients are getting is as safe and free of fat phobia as possible. I have a Master of Science in Human Canine Life Sciences and I am passionate about supporting folks who would benefit from an eating disorder recovery service dog and connecting them to programs & trainers. There is nothing like the healing support of a canine! I also have done three years of training in narrative based focused trauma care and lead story recovery groups. In my free time, I adore going out during Puget Sound low tides and exploring all the sea creatures, traveling, hanging out with my neighbors & community, eating delicious food, writing & teaching, loving on my two godchildren, and petting all the dogs.
Accessibility Considerations
All care is virtual. If we meet for in-person experiential work, I will make sure to explore restaurants/cafes that have weight inclusive seating and any other accessibility needs.
