My Philosophy of Care
My philosophy of care is rooted in fat liberation, disability justice, harm reduction, peer leadership, and community care. I approach my work with the belief that each person is the expert of their own body, story, needs, and healing. Rather than centering weight loss, “compliance,” or shame-based definitions of health, I support people in rebuilding self-trust, honoring their lived realities, and navigating food, body, recovery, and healthcare with more dignity and autonomy.
As a Health at Every Size®-aligned provider, I understand HAES® as both a framework for care and a commitment to challenging weight stigma, medical fatphobia, diet culture, and other systems that harm fat, BIPOC, disabled, queer, chronically ill, and otherwise marginalized people. I practice from a HAES® perspective because all people deserve care that honors their humanity, supports their agency, and refuses to treat any body as a problem to be fixed.
In my work, I apply the HAES® Framework of Care by offering non-diet, weight-inclusive support; affirming clients’ identities, access needs, and lived experiences; and making space for grief, anger, resistance, tenderness, and hope. I work collaboratively with clients rather than positioning myself as the authority over their bodies or choices. My goal is to provide support that helps people feel less alone, more resourced, and more able to pursue healing, recovery, and care without being asked to shrink, prove their worth, or disconnect from themselves.
About Me & My Practice
I came to this work through lived experience, community care, and more than 15 years of peer coaching with the National Alliance on Mental Illness. I have provided mentoring through the American Psychological Association MFP for 10 years, supporting others as they grow in their own identities, leadership, and care work. As a Superfat Black, disabled lesbian in disordered eating recovery, I bring both personal insight and deep respect for the complexity of healing in bodies and communities that are often mistreated by healthcare and recovery systems.
My work is rooted in fat liberation, peer leadership, disability justice, harm reduction, and Health at Every Size®-aligned care. While I am relatively new to formally naming my work through a HAES® lens, I have felt aligned with its values for many years: rejecting weight stigma, challenging medical fatphobia, honoring body autonomy, and refusing shame-based approaches to food, movement, recovery, and health. I currently facilitate a group for people in Superfat bodies so they can be witnessed, believed, supported, and treated with dignity.
I am a mother of three daughters and grandma Coco to five grandchildren. I love sharing lunches with friends, talking on Zoom with my 91-year-old aunt, and finding joy in everyday connection. More than anything, I love making people laugh. Humor, tenderness, honesty, and community all shape how I show up—both in my life and in my work.
