My Philosophy of Care
“Health is not a moral obligation” is a statement I came across as a student therapist. It shifted what had not already been shifted when a professor said “wellness is more than what we eat”. Combining those two statements, my practice centers client autonomy. Everything that is done in our therapy space is with the consent of the client. Most clients come to me after having at least one provider comment on their weight and/or health status. I am not that. My practice is grounded in being fat positive and knowing that not everyone has equal access to “health”. That does not mean anything about worth.
While my office is a small piece of the day, week, or month. It holds space for the grief and rage that comes with existing in a society where only a narrow definition of people are worthy. We find ways to build your individual community and to lean into trusting your wisdom.
Health is a complicated word. Health is especially complicated when communities of people do not have access to food, water, healthcare, green spaces, third spaces, safety. HAES in my office looks like centering client goals, offering psychoeducation (on health, intentional weight loss, problematic health research), and holding/expressing the rage and grief.
About Me & My Practice
I came into being a therapist for eating disorders accidentally. I was a nutrition student who fell deep into the "wellness trap". I ended up tearing my ACL, having a wonderful professor, and changing career paths to become a therapist all in one semester. I then worked in a residential setting in the DFW for half of my graduate program and the other half I worked in the local mental health authority in west Texas. These two work experiences gave me more than most classes ever could: seeing how inequitable our country is and the impacts that has on folks.
I have since set out on a journey to educate providers I work with about how their weight stigma is impacting those we work with, educating communities on how to raise body liberated children, and how to make repairs to the harm the systems have caused.
I am in the beginning of my PhD and my hope, truly, is to walk away with the skills to tear down (as taught to me by Da'Shaun L. Harrison) the systems we have that are actively and historically harming all of us, but especially the most marginalized of us.
Accessibility Considerations
My practice is virtual only AND I will work with providers that you work with to advocate for changes/heads up of how their practices run and how fat phobia shows up in their work.
