My Philosophy of Care
As a therapist and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, I believe we all have intuition and values that can guide us, but we often struggle to trust ourselves because of the external pressures of social norms, low self-esteem, or trauma. When we’re not living authentically and aligned with our values, our self-confidence and mental health suffer.
In the therapy room, I show my full personality and want you to feel comfortable doing the same! I use curiosity, openness, humor, and compassionate confrontation to connect with and challenge my clients, and I offer self-disclosure when it's helpful or increases safety and comfort for a client. No topic is off limits in my office — it’s a shame-free zone.
As a Health at Every Size (HAES) provider, I practice through both a social justice and trauma oriented lens. I will work to understand you and your identity with the awareness of how our social and cultural systems and your lived experiences have impacted you and your life. Not only does that mean I will prioritize providing quality, inclusive care for you in any body size or ability, but that I will also confidently and proudly advocate for you, your wellbeing, and your right to feel safe and respected in your body -- in the therapy room, to your care team, and in advocacy efforts in my personal life.
About Me & My Practice
Hi, I'm Aspen Turney, a licensed psychotherapist, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and practice owner of Bliss Therapy Co. I'm happy you're here!
After working in community mental health, private practice, and eating disorder intensive outpatient, I opened my own practice to create a space centered around authenticity, inclusion, and connection. Bliss Therapy Co. is where clients can show up, fully be themselves, and trust that their identities, experiences, and needs will be met with curiosity, dignity, and kindness. Clients are welcomed to attend therapy in my Phoenix office or virtually across Arizona; In office, I make sure to keep lots of resources to ensure clients feel at ease, including blankets, snacks, drinks, fidgets, coloring materials, and size inclusive seating.
As a human, you can find me existing in the world as a plus-sized woman, eating disorder survivor, therapy go-er, and dog mom. I love taking my dog to get pup cups, doing hot yoga classes, cooking yummy foods, traveling, playing board and card games, and listening to true crime podcasts (my anxiety doesn’t appreciate this!). I'm a proud advocate for HAES, fat liberation, LGBTQ+ rights, sexual liberation, and social justice, all of which inform my work as a therapist.
Alongside my therapy work, I serve as a Board Member of the Arizona Counseling Association (AzCA) to advocate for the wellbeing of counselors, students, and clients in the state of Arizona.
Accessibility Considerations
My office offers size inclusive seating that is wide width, deep-seated, and suitable for clients in high weight bodies. There is a bathroom on-site, and snacks and drinks are accessible at all times in the lobby and therapy room.
In office, I offer "No Weigh" cards (free) that clients may use in medical spaces to request a HAES approach and/or to decline to be weighed, and I offer safe sex and women's health resources for clients of all genders and sexual orientations, including condoms of various sizes, dental dams, lube samples, and menstrual products (also free).
* Please note that my office is on the second floor of a small building and can only be accessed by going up one flight of stairs. I am happy to meet any clients with mobility concerns at the bottom of the stairs to provide support and guide them inside to my office. Once inside my office suite, my office door measures wide width.
