My Philosophy of Care

As a provider that strongly believes in body autonomy and fat positive care, my role in my work with clients is to first and most importantly, validate their experience. I am a listener before a provider and make it my priority to sit with how my clients have experienced the world through their own unique body. I base nutrition sessions around my clients’ needs in that moment and their goals surrounding their relationship to food/body. I strongly believe that any individual I am working with is doing the best they can with the tools and support they are given. I do not condone eating disorders or disordered eating behaviors, as I recognize they can be vital tools to living in a white supremacist, ableist and anti fat world. In the same vein, I do not push health behaviors that feel inaccessible or out of one’s internal sense of safety. Health is not a status based solely off of individual decisions and does not make someone morally good or bad. Within my role as a dietitian, it is important that I do not encourage my clients to engage in health promoting behaviors if those are not valuable or accessible at the time. I believe that health is expansive and is not limited to physical health. I want my clients to have agency in their bodily choices and center other forms of health (mental, spiritual, emotional) if that speaks to them. I believe my clients are the experts on their bodies and their lived experiences and am here to share my knowledge once consent is given.

About Me & My Practice

I first came to hear about HAES® focused care about six years ago at the start of my career as a dietitian in an eating disorder treatment setting. I had been aware that intentional restriction does not provide sustainable weight loss outcomes, and I wanted to understand how I could provide a more encompassing and compassionate approach to health care. I have always been interested in social systems and the unconventional routes to inclusion and equity. I have undergone my own learning through the resources by fat activists, providers and educators and continue to center those of lived experience for my continual education. It is my responsibility as both an ally and a weight inclusive provider to continue unlearning harmful rhetoric and to continue exploring the ways my own unearned privileges may create unintentional harm. I am dedicated to learning from those who have been most marginalized and from those whose lived experience is most needed in this community and profession.

Accessibility Considerations

I provide only virtual services at this time. A stable wifi connection and access to a computer or cell phone is required for virtual sessions. I collaborate with my client’s primary care physician and other members of the treatment team as necessary. I will provide education on HAES®-aligned medical practices to other providers on the team and/or provide referrals to HAES®-aligned practitioners as needed.
