My Philosophy of Care

My philosophy of care embraces the goal of helping people reconnect with their internal wisdom about eating through the process of Intuitive Eating. I believe that this brings people to the freedom that comes with trusting their inner voice, rather than an external directive about eating. I advocate the pursuit of autonomy, as I believe that each of us is driven by the part of ourselves that needs to assert autonomy and independence. I am a Health at Every Size provider and belief in this approach because I believe that all bodies deserve dignity and care. I am also a social justice advocate, as I believe that anti-fatness contributes to the oppression of people who don't fit society's pursuit of thinness and that all marginalized identities suffer and are traumatized by oppression.

About Me & My Practice

I was an elementary school teacher in my first career out of college. I went back to graduate school to get my Master's degree in nutrition when I was thirty. Seven years later I went into private practice as a Nutrition Therapist and have now been in practice for over forty years. I believe that I was driven to this work as a result of healing my own eating disorder. I also believe that Intuitive Eating can be the ultimate healing treatment for eating disorders. As the co-author of Intuitive Eating, my goal has been to spread the word through writing, podcasts, media interviews, and talks. I have been practicing from the lens of Health at Every Size since I first learned about it in the early 2000s. I speak to people in the medical profession on a regular basis about the fat phobia that is ingrained in the medical complex and give them reasons why their approach is harmful and oppressive to fat and superfat+ folks. I am married to a woman who has been a trauma therapist for over forty years, and our approaches to treatment intersect. I have a 52 year old son who was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 19. My journey with his mental illness throughout the years has made me acutely sensitive to people who are neurodiverse. Outside of work, I love theater and films, spending time with my family, doing jigsaw puzzles, and reading, reading, reading. Books have saved me throughout my life from the multitude of traumas that I have experienced.

Accessibility Considerations

The only accessibility consideration has to do with whether a client has wifi in order to do virtual sessions. My work is fully virtual.
