My Philosophy of Care

I believe in Liberation Medicine, defined as the conscious, conscientious use of healthcare to promote social justice and human dignity. Regardless of body shape or size, we all deserve a physician who respects us and recognizes us as valuable members of society deserving of optimal health. My work in addiction medicine has taught me the importance of Harm Reduction, the efforts to reduce negative health consequence of substance use regardless of will/ability to abstain completely, in particular in marginalized populations who are more vulnerable to negative health outcomes. I think this philosophy is useful for all of healthcare.

About Me & My Practice

I trained in primary care and social Internal Medicine and currently work in an academic primary care practice, teaching trainees in Internal Medicine and Addiction medicine. There is a lot of anti-fat bias in the current curriculum delivered to trainees and I am proud to provide an alternative educational perspective and different treatment modalities for our patients who do not have thinness as a goal. The community that I practice in does not traditionally value thinness and I think they have the right idea.

Accessibility Considerations

Our clinic is wheelchair accessible and owns a range of sizes of blood pressure cuffs and other equipment. We have live ASL interpreters and phone and video interpreters for other languages. Clinic staff allows patient autonomy and does not require weigh-ins.
