My Philosophy of Care
I approach work with my clients in a collaborative and empowering setting. I know that trust is the most important factor in providing care. I acknowledge mental health care is part of the industrial medical complex that puts me in position of power. I do everything I can to bridge this power gap while respecting the inherent distrust people feel towards the system. I intentionally approach therapy using theoretical frameworks that help us to understand the collective picture. This means that I focus on the interaction between my clients and the world. I also recognize how many clients have experienced fatphobia within mental health therapy. So often we are told that our physical appearance is the reason we struggle with self-esteem, self-confidence, and oppression. As a provider, I challenge others to explore how the obsession with weight negatively impacts our mental health. The HAES framework helps providers challenge biases to decrease systemic issues that cause harm to all individuals. It provides a starting place for improving equity in healthcare.
About Me & My Practice
I grew up in a strict, conservative family with a focus on appearing perfect. As a teen, I started experiencing severe depression, anxiety, and an eating disorder, most related to needing to be perfect. I experienced fatphobia that resulted in delayed acknowledgement of my eating disorder, inadequate treatment for my eating disorder, and physical/financial hardships related to medical dismissal of health concerns because of my weight. I was introduced to the HAES framework about 9 years ago through a dietitian during treatment. I now bring the HAES principles to other therapists I work with, help clients to advocate for themselves, and sit with clients who experience oppression and discrimination in the healthcare setting. I engage in continuing education on needs of oppressed communities and recommendations for how to help. I also provide consultation and collaboration to other providers working with eating disorders.
I am a fat and queer individual. My partner and I both focus our lives on dismantling oppressive systems and engaging positively in our communities through various networks. We enjoy the love of our furry friends of many different species. We spend the warm months playing sports and going hiking. We spend the cold months watching movies and playing board games.
Accessibility Considerations
The clinic I work in is wheelchair accessible. Some seating is questionable, but I do my best to make sure the seating in my office is suitable for my clients. We do have scales and blood pressure monitors that are required for medication management, however I will recommend specific medication providers within or outside of my clinic based on my client's needs. I am a gender-affirming therapist. My clinic does not specialize in eating disorder treatment and most of our providers are not truly size inclusive. I am working to bring more of our providers towards weight-inclusive care.
