My Philosophy of Care

I am a graduate of the Counselor Education program at the University of New Mexico and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. My clinical interests include eating disorder treatment, fat liberation and body acceptance, and LGBTQIA+ issues. My counseling approach is largely informed by social constructionist theory, which emphasizes the influence of sociocultural contexts on individual wellness and identity. I believe that clients are experts in their own lives, and that my role as a counselor is to help clients to explore their perspectives and the contexts which have shaped them. While my approach to counseling is informed by social constructionist theory, some clients prefer to work on skill-building. My work also includes development of skills for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and relationships. When such skills development is relevant and needed, I incorporate Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) techniques. I believe that all people are deserving of compassion and unconditional acceptance. My goal as your counselor is to create a space where you can practice vulnerability and radical self-acceptance without fear of judgement.

About Me & My Practice

My goal as a clinician has always been to work with clients with disordered eating and body dissatisfaction, with the goal of using HAES-aligned approaches to help them move toward body acceptance and liberation. I am a certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and frequently discuss HAES principles with my clients and coworkers when appropriate. I encourage conversations about body liberation and HAES at my place of work through discussions of social justice, oppression of fat folks, and creating physically and emotionally accessible spaces for clients of all sizes and abilities. I plan to complete additional training to earn an eating disorder specialist certification with IAEDP, as well as training with the Center for Body Trust to work toward Body Trust Certification.

Accessibility Considerations

As a newer practitioner my current office furniture consists of hand-me-downs, and I am unsure of the weight capacity of seating in my office. However, I have several clients of size who have been able to sit comfortably for our sessions. Our building is wheelchair accessible and I have taken care to arrange my office such that clients in wheelchairs can be in a space that was created with them in mind. At present, our practice does not offer interpretation services; however, my personal office has sufficient space and seating for a client and an interpreter. I work with clients of all genders and am comfortable discussing and exploring gender with clients, to the extent that it is relevant to their reasons and goals for therapy.
