My Philosophy of Care

I am passionate about helping people resist diet culture in all its many permutations. With improved body acceptance, people’s ability to take good care of themselves (despite real or perceived “imperfections”) increases. Using cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and mindfulness-based strategies I provide an open & non-judgmental environment and use compassion and humor to help people build healthier relationships with their bodies, food and physical activity as it makes sense in someone's life. This is work I am truly passionate about! My ultimate goal is to help people live peacefully in their bodies by improving self-care skills while teaching how to navigate a challenging and anxiety provoking body culture. This includes providing knowledge and skills to help decrease negative media influences on body satisfaction. My approach is Health At Every Size® oriented, and recognizes that health and well-being are multi-dimensional concepts and highly personal.

About Me & My Practice

I am a clinician, activist, superfat white woman with lots of privileges and also physically disabled. I work in the psychiatry department of a large teaching hospital as well as having my own private practice. I'm an expert on the impact of weight stigma on health and regularly provide trainings and consultations on weight stigma and the best practices for fat people to different medical groups, conferences and individual clinicians. The HAES approach was crucial in my own recovery from BED over 25 years ago and I have been HAES oriented both personally and professionally ever since. If I had to sum up my work I'd say "I help people see their bodies as their partners rather than something that needs to be controlled, managed or fixed" I've attended ASDAH and the International Weight Stigma Conference numerous times over the years as well as a number of eating disorder conferences. I am currently on the DEI Advisory Board at the Academy of Eating Disorders, a member of the Diversity Center at MGH Dept of Psychiatry, and on the Advisory Board for Medical Students for Size Inclusivity (MSSI). Outside of my work I spend time with my daughter, husband, our dog Indy and our two kitty-cats Pheobe and Audrey. I'm currently obsessed with home renovation shows and tiktoks, and I love a good ghost story!

Accessibility Considerations

I see people virtually only, on zoom. There is no one patients have to speak with besides me. I do my own scheduling and billing at this time.
