My Philosophy of Care
At New Leaf Nutrition Counseling, we value providing person-centered care by recognizing that every client has unique identities and that not every person is starting from the same place when seeking support. We strive to align our care to support each client as an ally in their journey and pursuit of healing. We also practice from a harm-reduction approach when this meets the needs of our clients.
We further believe that health is uniquely defined by each individual and we get curious with clients about what health means to them. We support clients in recognizing and untangling anti-fat bias and the association between health and weight. We reject the idea that health is an individual obligation and that individuals are the cause of the state of their health based on their actions and behaviors. We recognize that health is implicated by various factors, circumstances, identities, and systems of oppression; not behavior alone.
About Me & My Practice
Lydia Fredeen is the owner of New Leaf Nutrition Counseling, a group practice of registered dietitians based in Portland, OR. Our practice is fat-positive, supporting people with a variety of nutrition counseling needs, with a specialization in eating disorder recovery and divesting from diet-culture.
We advocate for our clients by communicating with their healthcare team and providing education to providers who are not HAES® or ED informed to minimize harm that may arise in their care.
Lydia has attended the ASDAH conference and has completed continuing education through ASDAH and other organizations centering anti-oppressive training, such as EDRDpro. Lydia promotes centering fat folks and those with marginalized identies in staff training and education.
