My Philosophy of Care

I approach all therapeutic work with an utmost respect for bodily autonomy and the wisdom of lived experience. I trust that each person is the expert of their own body and experience. I help clients identify their most deeply held personal values and work towards living in alignment with those values. I understand that some people will make the choice to pursue weight loss in order to access vital things like public spaces, medical care, and the approval or love of important people in their lives. I will always respect their choice to do so, but I will make sure we acknowledge that the problem lies not in their body but rather in the culture/institution that discriminates against it. Some mainstream therapeutic tools that I might offer clients include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and mindfulness. However, I always emphasize that body shame is almost never a pathology arising in an individual, but rather the internalization and manifestation of systemic oppressions. I believe psychotherapy can be one powerful component of healing, but I encourage clients to seek and create community with like-minded folks to truly find liberation.

About Me & My Practice

I have been involved with the body liberation movement for over 15 years, my passion growing out of my own recovery from multiple eating disorders. An anti-oppressive practice framework is fundamental to my personal and professional values. I recognize that anti-fatness grew out of and is inextricably linked to anti-Blackness. I also recognize that all forms of body-based oppression (including racism, ableism, sizeism, ageism, misogyny, anti-queer oppression etc.) are interrelated and serve the function of consolidating power amongst a dominant minority. I received my MSW with a concentration in Health/Mental Health at San Jose State University in 2016. I am a member of the leadership team of Body Liberation Baltimore. I'm a parent to an amazing Autistic child who has given me the gift of an education in neurodiversity and disability justice. I have a quirky small dog named Bonbon who may in fact be a cat's soul trapped in a pup's body. I love to read fantasy and romance, and I enjoy trash and prestige television equally.
