My Philosophy of Care

I wholeheartedly understand how entering into therapy can take courage and be anxiety inducing (or maybe that’s just me?) and finding the right counsellor that aligns with your values can feel overwhelming. Prior to becoming a counsellor, I spent over a decade as a coach specializing in body image and disordered eating recovery and am a staunch advocate for body liberation and weight-inclusive care. I believe that all bodies deserve to be treated equitably and with respect, which is why Health at Every Size® is part of the foundation of how I work with clients. Disordered eating and body image challenges are complex and often born out of personal trauma combined with the trauma of living in a culture that upholds thinness and eurocentric beauty standards at all costs. I love to help clients unravel the root of these challenges and find ways of feeling more accepting and peaceful around food and their body. Utilizing a trauma-informed and intersectional feminist approach, I support clients with a wide variety of issues to help them process trauma, difficult experiences and emotions and move from feeling stuck to finding new perspectives and relief. I take a personalized and collaborative approach to find what resonates best for you and create a relaxed, judgment-free space where you’ll feel welcome, validated and embraced for all of the weird and wonderful parts of yourself.

About Me & My Practice

My commitment to mental health stems from my own therapeutic journey navigating past and present experiences with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, an eating disorder, chronic pain, grief following the sudden loss of a parent, miscarriage, parenting challenges, and mid-life transitions. I acknowledge that as a cis-hetero non-disabled white woman in a straight-sized body my lived experience may be very different to yours and will honour and cherish your identity and experiences.

My training is in feminist therapy and I’m fortunate to work out of a feminist therapy private practice - this means we look at how systems of oppression influence the challenges that we have and make sense of our struggles through this lens. Since 2012, I’ve committed to supporting clients with body image and a myriad of other challenges through a weight-inclusive and Health at Every Size® lens. Outside of counselling, I try to keep up with my super sporty kid (who did not get that from me) while trying not to hurt myself. When I can, I also love to nap, read memoirs, consume anything that makes me laugh and go to concerts.

Accessibility Considerations

For in-person appointments, my office is located in the Nelson Square building, which is wheel-chair accessible. We are located on the 6th floor, and we are accessible by elevators or stairs. There is a separate elevator from the underground parking to the lobby, then four more elevators in the lobby to take you to the 6th floor. Tere is an automatic door openers on the parkade doors, at the entrance to the lobby on the farthest door to the right. We currently don’t have an automatic door opener on our office at 601, so please let us know ahead of time and we’ll ensure the door is open for you. We have gendered washroom facilities as well as a universal wheelchair accessible washroom for any gender. There are various seating options including couches, chairs and stools in the waiting area and in the counselling offices. There are several lamps and natural lighting. We try to keep fluorescent lights off. We are a low-scent office. This means that we try to respect one another by not using strong, artificial scents, and we ask that you try to do the same. We usually have some subtle essential oils bubbling in our diffusers to help create a sanctuary-like space to escape from the downtown hustle.
