My Philosophy of Care
I believe that my clients are the experts of their own bodies and I support them in tapping into their body's own wisdom to guide their healing process. I take a therapeutic approach to nutrition counseling, utilizing various modalities such as IFS, ACT, and CBT. My work is trauma-informed and social justice-minded. I prioritize informed consent, client autonomy, and providing education on the systems of oppression at play that influence my clients' relationships with food and their bodies.
I strive to provide a safe, compassionate space for clients to be able to talk about their weight concerns and unpack what lies underneath them. My approach to health is individualistic, meaning I don't see health as a moral obligation, and I help clients to understand social determinants of health and to view health from a much wider, holistic lens than the narrow lens our current culture presents "health" as (diet and movement). I work with clients to help them re-define what health means to them and support them along their journey in working toward health promoting behaviors that are within their control.
Health at Every Size® Care is important to me because I’ve seen time and time again the harm and trauma that weight bias causes. I’ve seen how harmful yo-yo dieting and weight cycling is to my clients. I believe in body diversity and I am passionate about liberation for bodies of all of shapes, sizes, races, genders, sexual orientations, and ability levels.
About Me & My Practice
I got into the field of nutrition because of my own lived experience with an eating disorder when I was a teenager. I wanted to take that pain and suffering I experienced and alchemize it into helping people who were also struggling with their relationships with food (just as a dietitian helped me decades ago). As I learned about Intuitive Eating several years ago, I also was introduced to Health at Every Size and quickly realized that you can’t practice Intuitive Eating or treat eating disorders ethically without practicing Health At Every Size® care. I’ve invested countless hours in continuing education that centralizes providers and speakers with intersecting marginalized identities. I am aware of my own privileges (white, thin, cis-het, able-bodied) and seek to learn from others who see and experience the world through a different lens. I also have learned so much from holding space for my fat clients to share their own lived experiences of fatphobia and trauma with me.
Outside of work, I love being in nature, trying new restaurants and traveling to new places. I’m a big musical theater fan and love to sing and dance – I recently joined a local improvisational singing circle and it’s been medicine to me. I have a toddler named Luca and motherhood has been my greatest love and biggest challenge to date.
Accessibility Considerations
Our practice is 100% virtual right now and we use a secure HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform that provides accessible video therapy to clients. In addition to screen-sharing, interactive virtual activities, compatibility with screen readers (which is essential for those with vision issues), and live textual chat capability during calls (a helpful feature for clients and clinicians with hearing impairment), the platform also improves client accessibility with just a link to get started—no logins or passwords needed.
Our practice is also gender-affirming and will advocate on behalf of clients for gender-affirming treatment and surgery, especially if arbitrary BMI cutoffs are keeping them from life-saving treatment.
